Does anyone have experience with self-injury?It is happened three times in the past 4 years, two of which have been in the last 6 months.I've been under huge stress with lifestyle changes and relationship issues and I've punched myself in the head and beaten my legs in the heat of frustration during an argument with my SO.Please, no smart-assas I am a normal, 34 year old woman who has been completely caught off guard with this loss of control.
Please answer if you have experienced this or been with a loved one who has.

Never. It is never ok to do that type of thing. Especially for men. A theory l have found out seems to be true is this.
Men who beat their dogs, beat their kids, and beat their wives. It is a mental problem/lack of self control, and it is not ok.

Inflicting pain on yourself helps to put u in control & take ur mind off the situation which put u there to begin with. It is similar to ''cutting'' if u have ever heard of that. Which yes, l have experienced within my family. All of these mental issues i.e. anorexia, bulemia, cutting, sleeping around, all of them show u want CONTROL over a situation u do not feel u can. Another term for what u do is called ''self harm'' read the hyper link l attached.
Definitely seek help, this does not mean u r not normal it just means u r human & have a problem, as do most. Everyone has different coping methods some r more harming than others, but definitely look for some help so it does not get worse.

Frankly, too much stress in life can cause you to go into depression. There can also be high irritability and the inability to keep ones emotions in check. It should be normal for everyone who is put under extreme stress

ur self injury is not the same as someone who cuts themselves. You need help controlling ur anger. ANGER MANAGEMENT: If u can not deal with it by using one of the techniques, such as counting backwards from 20, to 1, (and prevent yourself from making yourself angry, in the first place) is important to express that anger appropriately, at the time, & to the person who caused it, if possible, or immediately afterwards. If not, maybe by walking away later, & bellowing ur rage. In some situations, such as work, or school, it might be better to cover ur mouth with a cupped hand, bandanna/handkerchief, or use the crook of ur elbow, to muffle the sound. Some people find that it helps to journal those thoughts, & emotions soon afterwards.
Anger, which is repressed, rather than healthily expressed, tends to fester, & later may cause explosive fits of rage, or depression. It helps to have someone u can talk to. For more physically inclined people, a punching bag, or hitting ur pillow, can be an effective release mechanism: visualise, as vividly as u can, that u r striking back at the cause of that anger. ''But next time, when u get mad, just remember this quote: 'Those who anger you, conquer you.' It is basically saying that when u give someone the power to make u mad, or let it get to you, it is like they're controlling you.
When l realized that, it made me mad, so l try to control my anger & not let people see it. You can still control ur anger without being walked all over. You just have to draw a line.'' Try saying to yourself, in ur mind: '' l am fire! l am ice!''. Repeat for as long as it takes for u to calm down sufficiently.

I've had to deal with that, yes. It can be very scary to feel like that, especially when u have never had to deal with something like that.
You just feel so out of control that u do not know what to do, & somehow, it makes u feel better.
The good news is that this is a common problem although lots of people do not like to talk about it.
The bad news, as u know, is this is not healthy for you. You've already identified why this is happening--because u r super-stressed & u feel like ur life is out of control.
l would strongly encourage u to see if u can find a counselor or therapist in ur area, especially one who works with women or teens. l know u r not a ''teen'' but this type of therapist tends to have a lot of practice with this sort of problem. If money is a worry, check a local college or community health center. They often have sliding scales for payment.
l think talking to a professional about it is ur best bet. However, here r some things l do to try to relieve stress on a regular basis.
*Exercise. l do martial arts which helps me to focus my energy & anger. *Deep breathing, meditation. When l get stressed out l take 5 to 10 deep breaths. *Hobbies, l enjoy cooking & reading so l do some of that. *BS Session with friends, just talking to trusted friends about the good & bad in my life. *Do what u can to try to fix the lifestyle changes that r causing the stress. Again, this is where a counselor would be invaluable.
