l just attended a group therapy session, and l swear on a stack of Bibles, l will never do so again. It made me feel even more like a social outcast.

Group therapy is proven to help. Many people go to therapy, like AA meetings, Cancer patients, and HIV. This gives you some insight on what you are going through. Some people may have already been through it and can give you advice. It is all about your attitude toward the group on how it will go, a bad attitude does not equal a good outcome or experience.

Grim, is not it? But - l hate to say this, but it is true - how u experience the group is simply a mirror of how u experience life. And the point of group therapy is to enable u to face the disparity between how u experience the world & how the world is. l spent all my time in groups in the past being certain l was being criticised. If people responded to what l said, it sounded as if they were saying it was rubbish. If no-one said anything, l 'knew' they thought it was rubbish. It took me a long time to begin to understand that that was not what was actually going on. l would never, ever, have believed this if anyone had said it at the start (well, they did, & l did not believe them) but in the end l came to realise that all this was inside me (and l began to understand WHY l felt like that) & it changed. Not just in the groups but in life in general. And thank goodness for that.

So - if there is any way l could persuade u to give it another go - & another - & another (sometimes it is easier if u can begin to notice how uncomfortable everyone else is) - then l recommend this ghastly process very highly. If that is not a contradiction.

EDIT: having read what Jon M has said, l need to clarify that l was talking from a British context where the NHS provides some group therapy for specific groups of people, usually run by very skilled & experienced group analysts; & that groupwork is also a part of some other contexts, including psychotherapy training, which is where l had to come face-to-face with my stuff.

I've been forced to do group therapy before when l was hospitalized and hated it. l did not think it was any ones business as to why l was having issues and l have individual therapists to talk to.

sometimes you have to find the right one to feel comfortable in. just keep going....after awhile you will start relating to some of the others who may be going thru the same thing you are. do not form a final decision on 1 meeting. good luck

l hated it too they think it brings you together but it doesnt it seperates you more and you feel 100% worse and weirder than before and
sometimes what they say it feels like their attacking you.
ugh l could go on l hate it alot.

There might be a few valid ones, but by & large, they r rip-offs set up by therapists & psychologists in cahoots with insurance companies. If every person in that group has some kind of insurance for mental health stuff, the therapist in charge gets the full amount from each person, with little or no overhead.

My mom tried going to some recently. She check out 3 & they were all nothing but social gatherings divided into cliques with a nominal nurse there handing out Kool-Aid & cookies. And Medicaid is forking over tons of money for it.
