I am trying to understand bipolar a little bit better and was hoping someone who has personal experience could give some insight. Is it all about your moods, or are there other things that people with bipolar tend to share like forming attachments too easily. being dependant on others. over sensitivity to how others react to you. Do your moods change for no given reason or are there triggers, do you know what they are? How long does each mood last for? Thanx in advance.

Bi-Polar is characterized by episodes of manic behavior (extreme highs, sleeplessness) followed by a crash of depressed behavior. Each lasting from several days to possibly weeks.
Going back and forth between emotions during a single day are called ''mood swings'' and are not really a symptom of manic-depressive disorder, also called Bi-Polar.

It varies from person to person and severity of the disorder. Can be triggered hormonally or environmentally or, seemingly, randomly. Can be slow can be sudden. Can last a few minutes, a few hours, a few months.
Generally people who form attachments too easily are considered co-dependant or to have addictive personalities and is not related to bi-polarism.

l had a co worker with bi-polar & before l knew she was bipolar l noticed that she had mood swings alot at work. One min she was m friend & the next she was talking behind my back. She wanted alot of attention & she would make up stories about things to make friends. l think it varies by the person but l know medication can help it out alot. There is also books u can read about it. She brought in a book to work & shared with us what she was going through. The book was Home of the up & down life by Paul E Jones or check ur local library for other titles.

My best friends husband is bipolar. He used to think that she is posing for porn vidoes.. & he used to get slightly violent. He started his medication & within 3 months things were back to normal. Then he stopped medicines. He called me once told me to come to his house immediately as his wife is acting up!! l could see something was wrong. Then when l got there she was terrible bacause he was abusing her. He was hospitalized again. Now he is on meication for last 2 years. No recaps!!! they r living happily now. Now he realizes that he is bipolar.

l am bi-polar. l have big mood swings. They are sometimes triggered by something or someone. They can also occur for no apparent reason. The mood swings vary as to how long thedy last. l am sensitive to how others react. l have a support group that is very helpful. Medications are great for stabilization.

Forming attachments or being dependent may be part of Bipolar Disorder, but it may also be from some other source, such as learned behaviour from a childhood home. Oversensitivity can definitely be part of it, along with a sense that everyone is ''out to get you'' or talking about u behind ur back, but, again, the oversensitivity may be from some other source. So it is hard to say how much would be due to the mood swings & how much would be learned or habitual. It depends very much on the individual (and this is why it is recommended that people with Bipolar Disorder have some form of cognitive therapy as well as medication, so they can learn to sort this stuff out).
Sometimes the moods can change for no reason that u can discern, but there r also triggers. It can take a long time to learn to recognise all the triggers, as some of them may be very subtle. It is possible to learn to manage these triggers, but it takes a fair bit of effort & a great deal of awareness.
The timing of moods is highly individual. Some people get moods that last for weeks or months, others have them for a matter of days or even hours. Sometimes moods change in a flash, sometimes it is a much slower process of sliding down or climbing up. It really depends on the person.

l am not bipolar, but one of my relatives are, they do have major mood swings & l know the slightest thing can set them off. It is weird because l do see them getting attached to people very easily, l did not know if this is part of them being bipolar. l know when they do get angry they just lose it, & a little bit later maybe sometimes even the next day they r sometimes ok or just really depressed, they do not remember the things they said or what they have done. l know if someone looks at them the wrong way even, not all the time but most of the times they just lose it.

l was diagnosed with Bipolar disorder last year, it actually started with depression & anxiety disorder but after watching my violent mood swings my doctor referred me to a specialist who said it was bipolar. It isnt just about ur moods but l think its the mood swings & about the moods that help to diagnose it properly. l was actually told that my mass spending sprees were due to the mania part :D
l must admit l do tend to form attachments very easily, & my dependancy can get a bit excessive. l learnt more about the disorder & began to try & work through that dependancy.
My mood swings can be rather violent, often going from 'happy-go-lucky' to 'ready to kill' faster than a speeding bullet! It also throws up suicidal thoughts on occasion but again through talking to other sufferers & learning u can learn to spot these thoughts & work through them, it takes time but with the right thought training it really helps. There r no real mood change triggers ive found so far, it can sometimes just change on its own! Some moods last for seconds, others for hours. l have found one thing though - im very prone to migraines (inherited) & l find that my moods change faster & last less time just before & just after a migraine attack.
Hope that helps anyway!

Everyone has mood swings, but people with bipolar disorder r characterized with drastic mood swings..we have ''higher peaks'' (mania) & ''deeper valleys'' (depression). What causes these mood swings depends on the individual. For me, what may seem like a little stimulant can amplify/magnify an emotion reaction within me. For example, if some guy goes to bar & asks a girl for a number & she says no, the guy would probably simply move on. For me, if l ask a girl for number & she says no. l would leave the bar & go home.and think that l am ugliest guy on the planet (just giving u an example.and it works the other way too.the littlest things can make us really happy). l try to stay grounded through therapy & medication,
l do not know if l would say l ''form attachments too easily'' or l am ''dependent on other''. l definitely would say l can be over sensitive. Triggers (or stimulants) r different from person to person. And as for how long each mood last for.it all depends on the person as well. Through medication & therapy, my downs do not last as long as they used to.

l am rapid cycling which means my moods change more often. l can become depressed & sometimes there is a sort of a creeping up on me effect that u can feel but can do nothing about. l can then go into suicidal mode which is very unpleasant & u can not stop thinking about being dead. Then l can start to change from that mood to hyper & then l think everything is wonderful & everything will be fine & l then become confused as to how l could have been depressed the last two weeks when life is so good. Then the depression cycles starts & then l can not understand how l ever thopught life was worth living & it all goes round again & again.
l always refer to it has going from day to night as its just like when the night becomes night & the day day u can not see the join in between it very gradually turns light & dark.
l can also have what r called mix episodes which u r hyper & very suicidal at the same time. These r worst as they r also the most dangerous in terms of risk of trying suicide as u brain is racing around & u can not think & u feel horrific depressed at the same time.
l can also flip a mood if something bad or good has hapend. l have always be very sensitive from a child but there is a difference to being sensitive & having a reaction to it than there is to having bipolar. Bipolar is moods that r irregular & change for no reason. It is a complex illness & difficult to fully describe but l can say l wish it did not exist as it is hell. There is nothing l have not tried in terms of diet changes. Exercise changes. l spent a fortune on a qualifide nutrinionalist & suppliments & nothing helps as its an illness & needs medication which l am waiting for.
This is a site about it http://mixednuts.net/bipolar.html
