For many years l self harmed and have now been left with many white scars all over my lower arms.My problem is im just about to take a university course in ODP and are hoping that scars will not get in my way.l was just wondering weather anyone has any suggests of how to disguise the scars or help reduce them.l am currently trying bio oil, but it dosent seem to be doing much, dose it take along time?? has anyone ever used it?? and what were the results??

first of all congrats on having found out it is a bad thing to do.. my daughter has been cutting her wrists for years and we could not help it, she had to find out herself. to get to your problem: idk what you could use for it, l can jsut encourage you to go to a skin specialist, my daughter did and she got mostly rid of her scars.. good luck!

You r better thinking up a good answer to why u have the scars instead of trying to hide them. Scars r hard to hide so do not bother wasting ur time & money on all those oils & lotions, they r all the same so u r best off buying a big tub of E45 cream for £4, it is as good as anything & should help ur scars from standing out so much. Unfortunately u have left it too late to do something about them, when a scar is still pink, it can fade almost completely if treated, but when white, there is not much u can do.

l am using bio oil on mine and l have noticed a difference, they're fading quicker then when l was not using it.

My best friend has many scars down her arms from self harming. She used to be afraid that people would see. Now she does not hide them because she can proudly say that she does not do it anymore, and that it is in the past. Be proud of yourself for not doing it now, you are a stronger person than you were then. People will accept that, more so than if you tried to hide it away from them.

l have the same problem, i'm doing a nursing course which requires me to wear short sleeves. You can buy a gel called dermatix from boots but it is quite expensive so maybe try & get it on prescription. You can also get on prescription cica care silicone patches, only problem is u need to put a bandage over them to hold them on, they do make ur scars alot less visible. You can also get a referral to the red cross who give u skin camoflauge - matching creams to ur skin colour. ur GP has to refer you.

I've self harmed for 10 years & am covered in scars. l have used bio-oil which has helped a lot but I've know reached a point where l do not try to hide them. l do not flaunt them but l am not ashamed (or l try not to be at least) because they r proof of my strength.
Without sounding harsh, ur scars will only get in the way if u let them. The more self conscious u r about them, the more people will notice. l wear short sleeves most days & it is incredibly rare for anyone to comment.
