Actually, only a physician can admit u to a hospital. l think you're referring to whether u should go voluntarily or not. If u do, u avoid the ''legal'' process that goes along with an involuntary commitment. Whether or not it is better depends on what u mean. With a voluntary admission, u have the right to leave (even if against medical advice unless u r an immediate risk to self or others), but there is the possibility u might not be really ready to go. On the other hand, if you're committed, u will always have that in ur medical record. There r benefits to each, & negatives to each.

It is better to go to the ER and tell them you are having suicidal thoughts. They will keep in you a mental hospital for atleast 3 days. It is really not so bad. I've been to one once. Last November. It really helped me out.

Yes,you should call or go to your local hospital if you are suicidal,if the doctors feel you are a danger to yourself or others they will place you on a ''51/50'' which is a 3 day hold where the doctors will Monitor you and direct you to what ever treatment they feel will help you Meds,counseling,etc.
